Review of Shire in the Scottish Cup Since 1882/83

In William Hill Scottish Cup week, with Shire’s 1st Round Tie due to be played this Saturday away to Broxburn Athletic, we thought that it would be worth having a look at some statistics from our history in the competition since we 1st played in 1882/83.

The following table is our all-time record in the Scottish Cup as at prior to this Saturday’s match:

Pens
P W D L F A F A
Home 111 49 20 42 236 201
Away 125 38 19 68 213 284 3 4
Neutral 5 0 1 4 2 13
TOTAL 241 87 40 114 451 498 3 4

Note: This table includes 1 home win which was recorded as a result of a walkover against Vale of Bannock in 1886/87. It also excludes the only ever Scottish Cup Tie we have played that was abandoned. This happened in 1891/92 with the Shire leading 3-0 at home to King’s Park. The game was abandoned 90 seconds from the interval due to heavy rain and high winds and Shire had even missed a penalty which would have been our 1st ever missed penalty in our history if the result had stood. The table also records our 3-4 defeat on penalties away to Edinburgh City in 1997/98 as a defeat as we lost the game on kicks from the penalty mark after the tie had ended 0-0 in 120 minutes.

The 1st Round match against Broxburn Athletic will therefore be our 242nd Scottish Cup game and the West Lothian team will be our 84th different opponent in the competition. This will be only the 3rd West Lothian team we have meet in the Scottish Cup, the others being Bathgate in the 1920s and Livingston in 2008/09. Our last Scottish Cup game in West Lothian took place as long ago as 23rd January, 1926 when we lost our 4-5 at Bathgate in the 1st Round. Our overall Scottish Cup record against West Lothian teams going into Saturday’s game is:

P W D L F A
Home 2 1 1 0 3 2
Away 2 0 0 2 6 8
TOTAL 4 1 1 2 9 10

Fortune hasn’t been kind to Shire in recent Scottish Cup draws as the game at Broxburn will be the 6th time we have been drawn away in the last 5 seasons with only a Replay against Annan Athletic in 2016/17 being played at home. It is as long as 2nd November, 2014 since we last received a home drawn when we met Dunfermline Athletic in the 3rd Round at Ochilview Park.

Since we 1st played in season 1882/83, when we lost out to Milngavie 1-2 away in the 1st Round, there have been only been 10 seasons where we have failed to reach the Scottish Cup. These were mainly in the 1st decade of the last Century when we didn’t win through from the Scottish Qualifying Cup competition.

During our history we have reached the Quarter Finals of the Scottish Cup on 3 occasions; in 1888/89, 1890/91 and 1980/81. We have also reached the last 14 in 1933/34, the last 16 11 times (most recently in 1992/93) and also the last 18 and last 20 on one occasion each.

Shire’s record wins in the Scottish Cup came in the same season, 1888/89. Both wins took place at our home, Merchiston Park; on 1st September in the 1st Round we won 10-1 against Stenhousemuir and only 3 weeks later in the 2nd Round we won by the same margin against Vale of Bannock, this time 11-2.

Shire’s record away wins in the competition are 7-0 against Gairdoch in the 1st Round on 7th September, 1889 and 8-1 against Newton Stewart, again in the 1st Round, on 26th January, 1924.

Our record draw is 4-4 which we recorded twice; 3rd November, 1888 in the 4th Round away to Dunblane and on 27th September, 1890 in the 2nd Round away to Campsie.

The highest aggregate Scottish Cup scoreline we have been involved in was the incredible 10-6 away win against Camelon in a 3rd Round Replay on 25th October, 1890.

Of the current 42 SPFL teams the only teams Shire have never met in the Scottish Cup are Airdrieonians, Elgin City and Inverness Caledonian Thistle (although we did play both Caledonian and Inverness Thistle in the competition).
