This game was eventually played at the 3rd attempt as the original fixture in September was postponed because the pitch was waterlogged then a few weeks back it was cancelled again because of the snow on the pitch. The game was played today in bright sunshine but on a hard bumpy pitch which was the same for both teams but did not help either team when the ball was on the ground.
Hawick Royal are managed by ex-Shire boss Craig Tully and have a number of ex-player’s in their team, both David McCaughie and David Grant took part in the match but Jon Tully, brother of manager Craig, was missing in the centre of defence due to being sent off in midweek against The Spartans.
The first 15 minutes of the game was easily forgotten as it was a case of both teams getting the measure of each other but on 17 minutes Jamie McCormack had a chance to put the ‘Shire ahead but blasted wide. However, the opening goal was only delayed a minute when a deep corner from Del Ure was headed in by Corner Greene at the far post with the referee judging the ball had crossed the line before keeper Craig Saunders touched it.
This gave the ‘Shire confidence and an Andy Rodgers chip was just wide of the post before a Ure free kick on 27 minutes curled into the box was hit home by Rodgers but celebrations were cut short by the assistants flag for offside.
The next ‘Shire chance fell to Paul Sludden who headed the ball across the goal but it was cleared.
Then ‘Shire keeper Jamie Barclay had to be alert to smother a low shot from David McCaughie which could have given Hawick an equaliser.
Shire skipper Derek Ure seemed to be involved in everything as it was from his pass to Paul Sludden 5 minutes before the break that gave the ‘Shire their 2nd goal as Sludden was able to beat the keeper from close range with a low shot.
Once again there was not much to say about opening 15 minutes of 2nd half but then ‘Shire took control with 2 goals in 3 minutes. The first one came on 62 minutes when Del Ure scored a free kick direct from the corner of the box, he looked and saw the keeper covering his back post so he curled it in at the near post with the ball being over the line before the keeper could touch it.
‘Shire’s 4th goal came 3 minutes later when a Drew Ramsay cross gave Andy Rodgers an easy chance to volley past their keeper from close in.
Hawick then scored the goal of the game on 68 minutes when substitute Cormac O’Brien hit a sweet shot from the edge of the box which Barclay did not see.
‘Shire continued to attack in the last 17 minutes but even though plenty of chances were created they were able to not add to the score. Connor Greene had a header when went just over the bar. Then sub Chris McLaughlin gave Paul Sludden a chance but he hit it over the bar.
Following this an Andy Rodgers header went straight to the keeper and with time running out Graeme MacGregor nearly broke his duck for the Shire running through a crowded penalty box but Saunders saved the resulting shot well.
‘Shire are now unbeaten in the last 16 league games, taking 44 points from the 48 available. Also the win extends the club record unbeaten run in competitive games to 15 and the record run of away wins to 10.
