‘Shire’s first encounter of the season with Hawick Royal Albert ended all square. The 1st game scheduled to be played at Hawick back in September had been postponed due to a waterlogged pitch and will now be played in 2 weeks time.
Hawick who are currently sitting at the foot of the table are managed by ex Shire boss Craig Tully and in their ranks they had 2 ex-players in Jon Tully and David McCaughie.
As expected with the ‘Shire being at home they had most of the possession but could not make the break through. Hawick threatened first when Jamie Barclay had to come off his line to collect a dangerous cross.
After 25 minutes Shire forced 3 corners in row, a Connor Greene header was blocked on the line by keeper Craig Saunders and an Andy Rodgers shot hit his own player Steven Brisbane to stop ‘Shire taking the lead.
‘Shire continued to keep the pressure on and 4 minutes later a Rodgers shot went just over then 2 minutes later Paul Sludden hit the bar with a great shot.
Even though Shire had most chances the best chance fell to Royal Albert’s David McCaughie when he was through with Barclay to beat but his shot was diverted by Barclay’s legs for a corner. Then the same player shot wide minutes later.
Kris Faulds was unfortunate not to give the Shire the lead on 43 minutes when his drive from 30 yards hit the inside of the post, went across the goal to go out for a goal kick.
Into the 2nd half and Savickas headed over from a Hawick corner when it should have been on target.
Midway through the 2nd half, on 67 minutes, Brisbane should have put the ‘Shire into the lead but with only the keeper to beat he hit his shot into the ground and Saunders saved easily.
Hawick then went straight down the field and, with the Shire defence unable to clear their lines, ex-Shire man David McCaughie scored with a low drive from 20 yards to put the visitors into the lead.
It could have been worse for ‘Shire 3 minutes later when Danny McFadden thought he was on-side and went round Barclay to put the ball into the net but the flag was up and the goal disallowed for off-side.
Similar to last week the ‘Shire had to come from behind and on 80 minutes Rodgers pass was met by Paul Sludden whose stunning first time shot gave Saunders no chance.
In the last 10 minutes ‘Shire tried to get the winner but it would not come even with Jordan Tapping having a great chance just going wide and then with the last chance of the game Andy Grant was unable to meet a ‘Shire corner and the ball went out.
At times during the game ‘Shire had not been able to get through the blue defensive wall of Hawick. The ‘Shire had had most of the chances in the game but unfortunately weren’t able to convert the chances into goals. The winning run of 7 games came to an end although the unbeaten run does continue and now stands at 12 competitive games, equalling the club’s all-time record.
