‘Shire got back to playing on a Saturday for the first time since 10th February as the following 2 weeks games had fallen on a Sunday & Friday then we had no game for the last 2 weekends. Today when it should have been a nice Spring day the nearby Ochil Hills were covered in snow and at times so was the pitch. With the exception of the long-term injured Liam Allison ‘Shire were at full strength for the game and lined up exactly the same as the last game played against Edusport Academy. Vale of Leithen were struggling with their team and had only 1 player on the bench for the game.
The first chance of the game fell to the Shire in the 6th minute when Jamie McCormack won the ball in his own half and although Vale thought it should have been a foul the referee played on. The ball then broke to Paul Sludden who hit a wonderful angular drive off the far post into the net from the corner of the 18 yard box. This should have settled the Shire but it was Vale who then controlled the majority of the remainder of the first half. They had a chance in 13 minutes when Sean Stewart drove just wide. In the 33rd minute Stewart again troubled the ‘Shire defence when his header hit the post and rebounded out and cleared. Vale did equalized with 9 minutes remaining of first half when from a corner Craig McBride crashed the ball of the ‘Shire crossbar and unfortunately when it bounced down to the goal line it hit the back of ‘Shire keeper, Jamie Barclay, and the ball went into the net when it would have stayed out.
Paul Sludden had had a glorious chance just before half time when he was through with just the keeper to beat but Vale keeper, Ross Gilpin, saved well.
‘Shire had the wind advantage in the 2nd half and took the game to their opponents. Sludden again found himself through with only the keeper to beat but he hit his shot wide.
Kris Faulds then a shot but ex Shire keeper Gilpin tipped his shot round the post. Sludden could not get the better of Gilpin when once again he was through with only the keeper to beat.
The ‘Shire were certainly creating the chances but just could not score. An Andy Rodgers cross came off the bar, then with Gilpin on the ground McCormack shot straight to their keeper and again with 8 minutes remaining the ball came to the back post where Drew Ramsay tried to head it in from a couple of yards out when it looked easier to hit it with his foot and the ball went just wide.
As the game entered the last minute Vale claimed for a foul in the box for hands placed on an attacker but the referee did not see any foul.
The game had entered stoppage time when a Del Ure cross was deftly headed home by Andy Rodgers to win the game for ‘Shire. This was Andy’s 50th Lowland League goal for the ‘Shire in 53 games.
Based on chances it was maybe fair that the ‘Shire won the game but it was cruel on Vale conceding so late on.
The win takes ‘Shire into 3rd place in the league and extends the club’s record run of competitive games unbeaten to 14 games. ‘Shire are now unbeaten in the last 15 league games, taking 41 points from the 45 available.
