When the fixtures were announced no doubt the League were hoping this game would be a crucial fixture in deciding the champions of the Lowland League. Spartans started the game in the knowledge that they were 1 point ahead of East Kilbride (who were playing Stirling University at Falkirk) knowing that all they had to was equal the East Kilbride score and they would be champions.
‘Shire welcomed back skipper Del Ure & Paul Sludden but lost Jamie McCormack who was unavailable. Steven Brisbane dropped to the bench.
The game was played in bright sunshine but overall it was a very low key affair, the first chance came after 6 minutes when an Andy Rodgers shot was too easy for Spartans keeper Blair Carswell. Sludden then had a chance when Blair Tolmie miskicked but his shot was wide,
After this ex-Shire favourite David Greenhill then had Spartans 1st chance of the game but he scuffed his shot from 18 yards.
7 minutes before half time Rodgers cut in from the goal line and cut the ball back but there were no takers.
Then Craig Stevenson and Greenhill combined down the left but Stevenson curled his shot high and wide.
The second half did not produce much goal mouth action. Spartan’s Jamie Dishington picked up the first yellow caution of the game for a late tackle on Drew Ramsay before ‘Shire captain Del Ure was booked for persistent fouling.
Shire suffered a blow with 56 minutes played when Rodgers had to be replaced by Brisbane with what looked like a pulled hamstring problem.
Stevenson then claimed a penalty for the home team but the referee decided the ‘Shire defender won the ball cleanly. From the resulting corner Blair Atkinson headed over when he should have at least make the Shire keeper work.
‘Shire then took the game to Spartans and had a few shots from Ure, Sludden and Graeme MacGregor but they were all comfortably dealt with by home keeper, Blair Carswell.
Sludden was booked for not retreating back 10 yards at a free kick on 76 minutes.
The game was drifting to a no score draw when Jordan Tapping made an excellent tackle as Spartans threatened to breakaway.
With the game in the 3rd minute of injury time and only seconds remaining ‘Shire were reduced to 10 men when Sludden picked up his 2nd yellow card and subsequent red for what appeared to be a late tackle.
The Spartans fans were celebrating as word filtered through that East Kilbride had lost so in the end Spartans. despite the 0-0 result, they had won their 2nd Lowland League championship.
‘Shire ended their League season unbeaten in 19 League games (a club record) which is a fantastic achievement, though the club record 10 away League wins in a row came to an end with this result. Some points dropped early in campaign cost ‘Shire dear in the title race and it will not be until 2nd May until it is discovered whether ‘Shire will end up in 3rd or 4th place in the League as BSC Glasgow do not play their outstanding game until then.
