This proved in the end to be an easy victory against Nithsdale Wanderers of the South of Scotland League though it took until the 2nd half for the Shire to convert their superiority into goals. Coach John Sludden chose to rest Connor Greene, Andy Grant, Graeme MacGregor, Andy Rodgers and Liam Allison from the starting XI and gave teenagers Aidan McKeown and Chris McLaughlin their competitive debuts. Fellow youngster Simon White was also given the nod to start the game.
At half time Shire led by just a solitary goal which had a lot to do with visiting keeper Sam Wilson, who twice denied Kris Faulds with brilliant reflex saves.
Shire had numerous chances to take the lead but were wasteful too, especially with a Steven Brisbane effort early on when he shot over the bar with the goal gaping.
However, after 43 minutes, Paul Sludden fired over a free-kick from wide on the right and Jamie McCormack’s looping header beat the keeper to finally put Shire 1 goal up.
Just before the break Sludden very nearly doubled the scoreline but his strike from outside the box struck the crossbar and rebounded into play.
Into the 2nd half and the Shire raised the tempo and ten minutes after the break Brisbane was pulled back inside the box and Paul Sludden scored the resulting penalty kick.
Another three minutes further on Paul Sludden stroked the ball into the net after a great run and cross from McCormack to made the score 3-0.
On 65 minutes Sludden laid claim to the match ball after being sent clear by Chris McLaughlin’s pass and firing into the far corner of the net. An 8 minute hat-trick.
The fifth goal was a great bit of skill from Jamie McCormack in the 76th minute when he came in off the wing and went round the keeper before planting the ball into the empty net.
Shire were awarded a 2nd penalty in the 79th minute when sub Graeme MacGregor had the legs taken from him as he shot for goal. Paul Sludden calmly scored from the spot, his 4th goal of the game and second from the penalty spot.
4 minutes from time the scoring was complete when Simon White’s pass sent Chris McLaughlin sprinting clear and he marked his debut with a goal by finishing nicely. 7-0.
