Shire went of the South Region Challenge Cup away to the current league leaders. The Shire had travelled to Alloa Athletic’s Indodrill Stadium for the 3rd Round tie on the back of a good result in the borders but it was not to be.
Right at the start of the game Andy Grant was short with a pass back but he recovered to put BSC’s Jack Smith off.
On 7 minutes an Andy Rodgers shot was tipped over the bar by their impressive keeper Ryan Marshall. Shire then had 3 corners in succession but we could not make the breakthrough.
A late challenge by Robert Jones on Jordan Tapping seemed to be a foul to the Shire but the referee did not think so. The result was a drop ball which both teams decided to compete, the first 2 attempts did not work as the ball had not touched the ground (a bit over fussy by the referee). Tapping was able to continue after treatment but he had to be withdrawn a short time later as complained he could not focus.
Liam Allison then had a shot for the Shire which curled just wide.
In first half injury time it was felt that we should have had a free kick on the half way line but the referee disagreed and following this Jamie McCormack lost possession on the corner of his own 18 yard box and fouled their winger. From the the resulting free kick, after a bit of head tennis, Jack Smith headed home to put BSC Glasgow 1 goal up. Shire felt aggrieved that the original foul had not been awarded in our favour but we then we had to failed to defend the cross which resulted in a 1 goal deficit at the interval.
BSC doubled their lead on 50 minutes when a late tackle on Connor Greene went unpunished and the ball broke to their winger who crossed for Gary Redpath to sweep the ball past Jamie Barclay.
With 75 minutes played Shire then had 3 good chances to score, the best one fell to Andy Rodgers but it was cleared off the line and their keeper made 2 great saves from Connor Greene headers.
The Shire eventually got a goal with 9 minutes remaining when Andy Rodgers broke through the middle and as the keeper advanced he expertly scored via the post. It had looked as though his shot was going to bounce out but it hit the inside of the post and ended up in the other corner.
Shire then continued to press we could not get the equaliser and the game ended in a 1-2 defeat.
One word of praise should go to BSC Glasgow whose hospitality to the Shire players and officials was excellent.
