Report

The two teams met today in the 1st Round of the Lowland League Cup in what proved to be the ‘Shire’s final game of the season.

East Kilbride were out for revenge having not beaten the ’Shire in the 2 league encounters this season, with the ‘Shire’s best game of the season being the 5-0 victory at Kilby last September.

It was a blistering hot day and once again Shire did not have much support from the substitutes bench as Andy Rodgers was unable to shake off a hamstring problem from last Saturday so it only left Chris McLaughlin, a sub keeper and a 2nd sub keeper listed as an outfield player. Although Liam Allison was also listed he did not make an appearance on the bench.

This was certainly a game of 2 halves with the ‘Shire having the better of the first half while Kilby had the better second. Unfortunately, despite a number of good chances ‘Shire created in the 1st half none were converted.

‘Shire’s 1st chance came on the 7th minute when from a Del Ure corner Graeme MacGregor’s shot was blocked and then ‘Shire had a bit of pressure with a couple of corners which the home defence survived.

Just after 25 minutes ‘Shire had a good claim for a penalty as Paul Sludden intercepted a pass and was brought down as he was leaving the box but the referee gave a free kick just outside the box. Captain Del Ure’s effort from the free-kick came to nothing.

A few minutes later Connor Greene powered down the right winning a few challenges and from this attack Drew Ramsay hit the bar before the ball was cleared. After Steven Brisbane had a shot which was easily saved.

10 minutes before half time a Sludden shot was saved by Kilby keeper McGinley and unfortunately Sludden blasted over the rebound.

Kilby then had a good chance when Wallace dummied past Greene but he shot over.

East Kilbride came out a different team in the second half taking the game to Shire with Darren Ramsay having 2 shots in quick succession saved by Jamie Barclay.

Shire then had a let off when the ball hit the bar and from the rebound Kilby had a shot which they claimed was over but with no goal line technology ‘Shire survived.

On 56 minutes Barclay had to be alert to save a Prunty chance. At this time ‘Shire lost Jordan Tapping to injury which meant the introduction of wide man Chris McLaughlin resulting in a shuffle in the Shire defence with Drew Ramsay moving to the left back position, Adam Murray to right back and Connor Greene to right centre defence.

‘Shire’s only real attack this half came after 62 minutes when Drew Ramsay sent in a great cross which Brisbane was unable to connect with.

Sean Winter who had come on as a half time sub was causing ‘Shire problems and he saw his shot defected for a corner,  then Barclay had to be on his toes to save from same player.

Midway through the 2nd half Prunty hit a drive which rebounded from a post with the ‘Shire keeper a bystander.

Kilby’s claim for a penalty in the 78th minute was waved away and instead Bernard Coll was booked for diving in the box (Coll had had to change his shirt to the no. 19 shirt at half time because of blood ).

Sean Winter made the breakthrough for the home team with 9 minutes remaining when, with the ball bouncing in the box, he was able to steer it into the net.

After this the game got a little heated and the referee had to issue a number of yellow cards. However, Kilby were happy to see out the remaining minutes.

The only real piece of action was as the game entered injury time was when Jamie Barclay was forced to make an excellent save from a free kick from 22 yards.
