East Stirlingshire v East Kilbride 24/8/19 – Reporter: Ewan Malcolm

Derek Ure said his side need to be ”more clinical up top” if they are to turn their season around after losing 1-0 to East Kilbride on Saturday.

Ruari Paton’s second half tap-in ensured last season’s champions picked up all three points in a tightly contested affair at the Falkirk Stadium.  However, Shire were left with a felling of what could have been after squandering multiple chances that on another day, could have ended up in the back of the net.

The defeat leaves Shire nine points behind leaders Bonnyrigg Rose, albeit with a game at hand.

Speaking to ShireTV after the match, Ure said: “I think when we look back at the game, we created a fair few chances that we should have done better with in my opinion. I questioned how much we wanted it against Bonnyrigg, but I can’t question that today. They did well, but we have to be more clinical. We’ll need to have a wee look back at the game, but there’s always potential for us to make changes, but we can’t have a knee jerk reaction where we change things just for the sake of changing it.”

Certainly, Shire’s performance on a whole was a largely positive one. Early Nicky Low and Mark Millar shots were indicative of a dominant first half display from the hosts as they sought to put their 3-1 defeat to Bonnyrigg Rose behind them.

It seemed as though Shire would make their first half pressure count when an excellent passing move initiated by Jordan Tapping ended with Matty Flynn bearing down on goal, but the forward’s goal bound shot was denied by some heroic Kilby defending.

Shire struggled to replicate their first half dominance after the interval with both teams unwilling to take the necessary risk to open the scoring. However, having shown little sign of last season’s championship winning form, East Kilbride suddenly burst into life with Paton ghosting onto the end of a Sean Winter cross to put the visitors ahead.

The visitors showed all their guile in their efforts to shut out the desperate hosts and looked to be sailing towards a victory that had looked unlikely before Paton’s strike. However, Sean Brown nearly broke Kilby’s resistance, but the former Cumbernauld Colts man saw his header crash off the post.

Brown’s effort proved to be the only scare fans of Kilby had to endure in the dying moments with the visitors seeing out a vital win.
