‘ Shire extended their long unbeaten run to 17 league games as they grabbed an injury time equaliser today. This also meant that the club’s current record overall unbeaten run in competitive games now extends to 16.
Spartans fielded a number of ex Shire players in Michael Herd, Scott Maxwell, and David Greenhill whilst the ‘Shire had the same 1st XI for the 4th week running.
The Shire were led out by Derek Ure’s kids as he recently completed 400 competitive games for the club.
The first chance fell to Kris Faulds after 5 minutes when he tried to glance a header towards goal but it went wide. Sad to say this was his last real action as a few minutes later he was injured and was taken to hospital, where it was thought he might have broken his ankle but it has been confirmed as soft tissue problem. Graeme MacGregor was his replacement.
Another chance fell to the Shire on 18 minutes when Andy Rodgers tried to place a header at the far post but it went wide. The same happen a few minutes later with an Andy Grant header from a corner.
Spartans might have had most of the possession but they did not trouble the Shire goal until the 41st minute when David Greenhill was allowed a lot of space in the 6 yard box for an header which Jamie Barclay had to make a good save by tipping over. However, Spartans took the lead from the resulting corner when the ball broke to Jamie Dishington outside the box who hit a 20 yard low drive in off the post.
‘Shire equalized 7 minutes into the 2nd half when Paul Sludden was fed through by Rodgers and he was able to beat Blair Carswell from 10 yards.
Spartans then had the majority of the chances when Bremner, Stevenson and Maxwell all had chances to give Spartans the lead but all ended wide.
Then from a Del Ure corner Jamie McCormack tamely headed to Carswell.
Over the season both the Shire & Spartans have scored lots of late goals so fans were advised to stay. The ‘Shire players were not happy when Connor Greene was penalised with 3 remaining minutes on the clock and Craig Stevenson curled the resulting free kick into the near post to put them into the lead.
However, ‘Shire were not beaten and in the 2nd minute of injury time Spartans retreated into their own half allowing Jamie Barclay to bring to ball up to near the half way line when he launch it high from where Rodgers fed Drew Ramsay on the left wing who hit a low cross which Shire skipper, Del Ure, back heeled into the goal to tie the game at 2-2. The referee blew for full-time shortly after.
The score takes the ‘Shire back into 3rd place and allows Spartans to go one point ahead of East Kilbride with both teams having 3 games remaining in the league.
