East Stirlingshire ended a three-game losing run on Friday after dismantling Edusport Academy 3-1 at a windy Galabank.

Goals from Paul McCafferty, Derek Ure and Ross Allum ensured that Shire collected a much needed three points to put gaffer Ure at ease having witnessed his side slump to some worrying defeats recently.

Edusport’s form coming into this one rightfully placed them as favourites.  However, a tight a 1-0 loss to Barry Ferguson’s Kelty Hearts in their last fixture left the Annan based side with work to do if they were to continue their surprising surge up the table.

The concession of four goals in the first half against Spartans last week left Shire with too much to do as they battled to a 4-3 loss.  However, Ure and his team were in no mood to repeat last times failures and set about redeeming themselves.

Ure, having named himself in the starting line-up for the first time since taking charge, sought to lead by example and very nearly gave his side an early lead when he fired narrowly wide of the top corner of Edusport’s goal.

Shire, having played into the wind for the entire first-half, looked to capitalise immediately in the second when Ross Willox freed McCafferty in the Edusport box however the Shire man’s effort was comfortably saved.

Edusport’s naive defending was exposed yet again when McCafferty stroked home the opener after Ure’s incisive pass had left their defence rooted for the second time in less than five minutes; just reward for Shire’s renewed belief and purpose.

Shire had every right to believe that they had turned a corner were it not for Matt Flynn who ghosted to the edge of the Shire box before calmly side footing home the equaliser that had looked highly unlikely at that point.

Ure’s talk of ‘embarrassment’ over his side languishing in 11th place after defeat to Spartans last week capped a terrible sequence of events for Shire.  However, Ure’s hands on approach paid dividends when his hooked corner curled into the back of the net to re-establish Shire’s lead immediately.

Shire with confidence now high throughout the team, subjected their hosts to relentless attacks and were rewarded when Ross Allum added his side’s third to continue his fine vein of form and secure a vital win.

Ure and his team will hope to build on this win with another against a struggling Vale of Leithen side next week.
