East Stirlingshire FC Players Killed In Action

A number of players of East Stirlingshire FC were involved in armed service during the wars of the 20th Century. Sadly a few never returned.

We remember the following 8 known Shire players who were sadly killed in action in both conflicts.



John Wilson Harper









Debut – 16/8/1899 v Camelon (a) Falkirk & District League

Position – Inside Left, Outside Left, Outside Right, Half Back

Club Honours – Scottish Qualifying Cup W 1898/99 Club Honours – Central Football Combination League RU 1898/99 Falkirk & District League W 1898/99 RU 1899/1900 Falkirk Cottage Hospitals Shield W 1898/99, 1899/1900

Known Career – Our Boys (Bo’ness), East Stirlingshire (1898/99 to 1900/01), Bo’ness (1901/02)

Notes: Pte John Wilson Harper, killed in action 23/3/1918 – Seaforth Highlanders – 39 yo. Information and photos of his East medals kindly provided by John’s great grandson’s Ian Harper and Bobby Harper


Thomas (Tom) McCulloch

Debut – 15/10/1904 v Ayr (h) Division Two

Positions – Inside Left, Centre Half, Centre Back, Outside Left

Known Career – Cowie Wanderers (1904/05), Heart of Midlothian (1904/05 – played as guest), East Stirlingshire (1904/05), King’s Park (1905/06), Broxburn (1906/07)

Notes: Falkirk Herald 26/5/1917 – Pte T. McCulloch of the Canadians, killed in action, on 5/5/1917 – Old East Stirlingshire player and Heart of Mid-Lothian player. He belonged to Cowie


Albert Duff Milne

Debut – 13/12/1911 v Stenhousemuir (a) Stirlingshire Cup 1st Round Replay

Position – Left Half

Known Career –Stenhousemuir, East Stirlingshire (1911/12)

Notes: Falkirk Herald 21/7/1917 – Pte Albert Duff Milne killed in action 8/7/1917 – Gordon Highlanders – 32 yo – some years previous played with Stenhousemuir and East Stirlingshire


Donald (Don) Sloan

Debut – 16/8/1913 v Vale of Leven (h) Division Two

Position – Goalkeeper

Known Career – Distillery (Northern Ireland) (1903/04 to 1905/06), Everton (1906/07 to 1907/08), Liverpool (1908/09), Distillery (Northern Ireland) (1909/10), Bathgate (1911/12), East Stirlingshire (1912/13 to 1913/14)

Notes: Pte Donald Sloan killed in action 1/1/1917 – Black Watch (Royal Highland Regiment) – 33 yo. He played one game for Irish League XI and had been player-manager of Distillery in 1909/10


William Stoddart

Position – Goalkeeper

Notes: Falkirk Herald 10/3/1917 – Lce. Copl. William Stoddart killed in action 15/2/1917 – Royal Scots – 30 yo. We have yet to trace when William played for East Stirlingshire



George Lapsley Hannah

Known Career – Falkirk Amateurs, Forfar Athletic (1921/22), Falkirk (1921/22), East Stirlingshire (1922/23)

Notes: Falkirk Herald 26/9/1942 – Seaman George Lapsley Hannah missing and presumed killed in action 9/1942 – Royal Navy – 42 yo


Arthur M. King
